Design Challenge: The challenge was to renovate an old auto repair shop, which had been behind a neighboring wall, into a new addition for a Street Ministries office building. The design needed to accommodate a variety of functions, from counseling, administrative, and nurse offices to an efficient donations storage area. It also had to ensure the safety of both operations and visitors, while providing accessibility for people with different needs. The renovation also had to be achievable on a modest budget. Complicating matters, the existing building was constructed on four different levels.

Our Solution: We created a functional flow with separate zones for visitors and staff, maximizing flexibility, efficiency and safety. A mezzanine was added to increase storage capacity. Existing structures were reused and optimized wherever possible, keeping costs down and sustainability in mind. Throughout the process, we worked closely with local zoning authorities due to the project’s unique operational requirements.
